Mother’s Love

As a chef, it is but normal for me to be faced with tons of delicious food on a daily basis. It can be difficult for me to be able to cut back on my intake since I would always have to taste test all the dishes which come out from my kitchen into the dining area. I also work longer hours since I have to get to the market early in the morning and would finish restaurant service late at night. This is why I would have no time to get some exercise since gyms would usually be closed by the time I was through.

My mother would not let any excuse get to her anyway, and got a Bowflex PR1000 a few days ago. She said that I would need to look after my health as I have always been focused on my career. If I intend to live a longer life I would need to infuse healthy lifestyle. I know this can be difficult, but I would need to get on top of it.

Indoor or Outdoor Exercise?

Different people enjoy different kinds of exercises. Some people enjoy the great outdoors. They schedule a weekend or two monthly to go hiking, rock climbing or rowing. They simply could not stand working out in an airconditioned gym. They prefer the feeling of freedom that comes with being outdoors.

Other people prefer the predictability and reliability of a good ol’ gym, or their own living room. They like being able to watch TV or read a book while sweating it out on a treadmill or stationary bike. They could also save time travelling elsewhere to achieve the same purpose. Whichever you prefer, the important thing is to keep your workout regular and enjoyable.

Next, assess your fitness level which includes flexibility, body composition and aerobic and muscular fitness. You should also consult your doctor before beginning any fitness program especially if you have an existing medical condition.

To help your assessment, inform your doctor of the following:

  • How long it takes you to walk one mile and what your pulse rate is before and immediately after that walk
  • Your body mass index and your waist circumference at the level of your navel
  • How far you can reach forward while seated on the floor with both legs in front of you

Stay In Shape

There’s a new trend in working out these days. A few years ago, non athletic people like me who enrolled in gyms could get a trainer. Today, people who are not into sports could get a coach. It used to be the coaches were reserved for sport teams. Today there are coaches who concentrate on fitness workouts, corporate fitness and beginning runners.

Back in the 90s, fitness workouts usually involved workout videos. The videos were mostly bought by women. There were very few videos to choose from back then. Today there are hundreds of workout videos or DVDs. There are even video games that encourage fitness. These video games simulate the actual movement.

Defining Fitness

The definition of physical fitness has broadened from being focused primarily on athletic performance to include modern health-related aspects.  The reason for this change is that fitness, or being fit, can be complex or even abstract. This is the reason for so many different definitions. For instance, government health agencies and other organizations define physical fitness differently although they do agree on certain aspects.

To get clarification on the definition, you have to first understand the definition of fitness is composed of two separate parts. Including both parts makes things more accurate. The most accepted definition includes a general or health-related fitness component as well as the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or tasks. The definition falls short when it only uses one part.

Mall Walking and Treadmills

In many shopping malls, walking programs are encouraged.   You can walk with a group of friends or go it alone and be quite safe.   It’s quite possible to cover the distance you generally cover in an outdoor walk. Mall walking is quite popular in places where there are long winters and people are advised not to go outdoors to walk because of ice and snow.

A good walk can be had using a treadmill. You don’t need a fully equipped modern treadmill for indoor walking. A basic manual treadmill will serve the purpose very well and it will help in achieving good health and weight loss.   Walking is an excellent aerobic exercise that is very good for your heart and other organs of your body. It helps to promote good flow of blood throughout the body.

There are various home gym equipment choices that can be chosen for a wide range of different exercises.  Two of my favouties are the mini rebounder and the elliptical machine.  They will keep you in shape and on course to reach your overall fitness goals. When time and conditions are not a problem any more, you can work out at your own pace, in the comfort of your home.
